Our final chapter, our biggest adventures and a whole new world of possibilities!

Welcome to Year 6 at Brinscall St John's!

Year 6 is a truly special year. A year of exciting challenges, growing independence, unforgettable memories and incredible achievements!

As our children begin their final year at Brinscall St John's, we want them to feel proud of everything they have accomplished, excited about the opportunities ahead and confident in the wonderful young people they are becoming.

Our Year 6 classroom is a happy, purposeful and supportive place where children are encouraged to think independently, aim high, embrace challenges, take responsibility and believe in themselves.

We have high expectations because we know just how capable our children are. However, we also recognise that Year 6 is about so much more than academic achievement.

It is about developing confidence, strengthening friendships, discovering new talents, creating lasting memories and preparing for the next exciting chapter of life.

At Brinscall St John's, we believe that who we are and how we treat others matters just as much as what we achieve.

Our six school values continue to guide everything we do:

Kindness • Respect • Resilience • Courage • Friendship • Forgiveness

In Year 6, these values take on an even greater meaning.

We encourage children to show kindness by looking out for others, demonstrate respect through their words and actions, develop resilience when faced with challenges, show courage when stepping into unfamiliar situations, treasure their friendships and recognise the importance of forgiveness.

As the oldest children in school, our Year 6 pupils have a wonderful opportunity to become positive role models, inspiring younger children through the choices they make and the example they set.

Together, we continue to live out our school vision:

“Shine with the Light of Jesus”

Our greatest hope is that every child leaves Brinscall St John's knowing that they are valued, that they have something special to offer and that they have the confidence, compassion and courage to let their light shine wherever life takes them.

One year. So many opportunities. A lifetime of memories.

Year 6 is an exciting milestone in every child's primary school journey.

As the oldest pupils at Brinscall St John's, our children have opportunities to demonstrate responsibility, develop leadership skills and make a positive contribution to school life.

Throughout the year, we encourage children to:

    • Become positive role models for younger pupils.

    • Demonstrate our school values through everyday actions.

    • Support and encourage others.

    • Share their ideas and take responsibility.

    • Set themselves ambitious goals.

    • Develop independence and resilience.

    • Have the courage to embrace new challenges.

    • Make the most of every opportunity.

We want our children to understand that being a leader isn't always about being in charge.

Sometimes, the greatest leadership comes from listening, encouraging, helping someone who is struggling or simply doing the right thing when nobody is watching.

In Year 6, we encourage every child to lead by example and recognise the difference they can make.

Learning Together at Home

Building confidence, independence and good learning habits

As children prepare for secondary school, developing positive home learning habits becomes increasingly valuable.

We encourage children to take responsibility for completing their learning activities while recognising that encouragement and support from home continue to make a difference.

    📖 Reading
Children should continue reading regularly at home, developing their fluency, comprehension and enjoyment of books.

We encourage families to talk about reading and celebrate children's growing independence.

    🔤 Spellings
Children should continue practising the statutory spelling words for Years 5 and 6, alongside revisiting important spelling patterns and words from previous year groups.

Teachers regularly assess children's spelling through their writing and everyday learning.

Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 & Year 6 spelling lists can be viewed via the homework tab.

    🔢 Maths
Regular practice of multiplication and division facts remains valuable.

Children can use Times Tables Rock Stars and other mathematical activities to maintain fluency and confidence.

    ✏️ Additional Home Learning

Any additional Year 6 homework, revision activities or useful resources will be shared by Miss Riley.

Our aim is to help children develop independence and confidence while ensuring home learning remains purposeful, manageable and positive.

SATs - Showing What we Know

SATs - Showing What we Know

Supporting every child to feel confident and prepared

During the summer term, children in Year 6 take part in the statutory Key Stage 2 assessments, commonly known as SATs.

These assessments help measure children's attainment in reading, grammar, punctuation, spelling and mathematics.

Throughout the year, we carefully prepare children through high-quality teaching, regular opportunities to revisit important knowledge and familiarisation with assessment-style questions.

However, we are very clear about one thing:

SATs do not define a child.

They are simply one way of measuring certain aspects of children's learning at a particular point in time.

They cannot measure kindness, creativity, friendship, courage, determination or the many wonderful qualities that make each child unique.

We want our children to approach SATs feeling calm, confident and well prepared, knowing that all we ask is for them to try their very best.

We are proud of our children for who they are, not simply for the results they achieve.

Further information about SATs, including key dates and helpful guidance for parents, will be shared throughout the year.

Preparing for Secondary School

Preparing for Secondary School

    New beginnings, exciting possibilities!

Moving to secondary school is an important milestone, and we want every child to approach this next chapter feeling confident, positive and excited.

Throughout Year 6, we support children as they prepare for the changes and opportunities ahead.

We help children develop practical independence, organisational skills, confidence in new situations and the ability to manage change.

We also provide opportunities to talk about their hopes, questions and worries.

We recognise that every child will feel differently about moving to secondary school. Some will be excited, some may feel nervous and many will experience a mixture of both!

Our aim is to ensure every child feels listened to, reassured and supported.

We work with families and secondary schools to help make the transition as smooth and positive as possible.

    Once Brinscall, Always Brinscall!

Although our children will eventually move on to new schools and exciting opportunities, they will always be part of our Brinscall family.

We hope they carry our values with them, remembering that kindness, respect, resilience, courage, friendship and forgiveness can help guide them wherever they go.

Our children may be leaving our classrooms, but we hope the light they have developed here continues to shine brightly for years to come.
