CurriculumRE
We are a Church of England and Methodist school and we are committed to the Christian Faith, recognising and valuing the Anglican and Methodist traditions. The Religious Education in our school is in accordance with the rites, practices and doctrines of the Church of England and Methodist Church as laid down in the Trust Deed. The management of Religious Education is a distinctive role of the governors and Headteacher.
Through our RE curriculum we aim:
-
To know about and understand Christianity as a diverse global living faith that influences the lives of people so that they shine the light of Jesus Christ.
-
To explore core beliefs using an approach that critically engages with biblical text.
-
To enable pupils to gain knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews appreciating diversity, continuity and change within the religions and worldviews being studied.
-
To explore their own religious, spiritual and philosophical ways living, believing and thinking so that they will want to make a difference in the local and wider communities, contributing to a healthy mind.
-
To encourage children to dive deeper in their thinking in order to develop an enquiring mind, not being afraid to ask big questions and be investigative.
-
To engage with challenging questions of meaning and purpose raised by human existence and experience.
-
To encourage children to be creative in their thinking, making links between religion and their own lives.
-
To recognise the concept of religion and its continuing influence on Britain’s cultural heritage and in the lives of individuals and societies in different times, cultures and places.
-
To use a religious vocabulary to help children express their understanding.
Please note: Parents have the right to withdraw their child(ren) from RE lessons. Further information can be obtained by contacting Mrs J Owen, Headteacher.
Questful RE
At our school, we use Questful RE, a primary Religious Education (RE) resource developed by the Diocese of Blackburn. It provides a structured and engaging approach to learning about Christianity and other world religions, helping children to explore important questions about life, faith, beliefs and values.
Questful RE encourages children to develop their knowledge and understanding of Christianity, alongside learning about other religions and worldviews. It supports children in exploring what people believe, how beliefs influence the way people live, and why faith and religion are important to individuals and communities.
What do children learn through Questful RE?
Through Questful RE, children have opportunities to:
- Explore Christianity: develop an understanding of the Bible, the life and teachings of Jesus, Christian beliefs, worship and festivals.
- Learn about other religions and worldviews: discover the beliefs, practices, celebrations and traditions of different faith communities.
- Ask big questions: consider questions about the world, life, belonging, right and wrong, and what it means to be human.
- Develop respect and understanding: appreciate the diversity of religious and non-religious beliefs and recognise the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect.
- Reflect on their own ideas and values: think about their own experiences, beliefs and opinions, while listening thoughtfully to the views of others.
How is RE taught?
Lessons are planned to be engaging, inclusive and appropriate to the children's ages and stages of development. Children learn through stories, discussions, questioning, reflection and creative activities. Where appropriate, they may also explore religious artefacts, music, celebrations and places of worship to deepen their understanding.
Questful RE encourages children to be curious, ask thoughtful questions and consider different perspectives. Children are not expected to adopt particular religious beliefs; instead, they are supported in developing knowledge, understanding and respect for the beliefs and experiences of others.
How does Questful RE benefit our children?
Religious Education helps children to develop a greater understanding of the world around them. Through Questful RE, children are encouraged to become thoughtful, respectful and reflective individuals who can engage positively with people from different backgrounds and communities.
The scheme supports the development of important skills, including critical thinking, empathy, communication and the ability to express ideas clearly and respectfully.
How can parents and carers support learning at home?
Parents and carers can support their child's learning by talking together about different beliefs, celebrations, traditions and values. Sharing family experiences, visiting places of worship where appropriate, reading religious stories and encouraging children to ask questions can all help to develop their understanding.
We value the opportunity to work in partnership with families to help children grow in knowledge, curiosity and respect for others.
