Big ambitions, growing independence and exciting opportunities to make a difference!

Welcome to Year 5 at Brinscall St John's!

Year 5 is a fantastic year of discovery, challenge, growing independence and exciting opportunities!

As our children move into Upper Key Stage 2, they begin an important new chapter in their school journey. They are becoming increasingly confident, capable and independent young people, ready to take on greater responsibility, embrace new challenges and discover just how much they can achieve.

Our Year 5 classroom is a happy, purposeful and supportive place where children are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions, challenge themselves, share ideas and take pride in their achievements.

We want every child to develop the confidence to have a go, the determination to keep trying and the ambition to aim high.

At Brinscall St John's, we believe that who we are and how we treat others matters just as much as what we learn.

Our six school values are at the heart of everything we do:

Kindness • Respect • Resilience • Courage • Friendship • Forgiveness

In Year 5, we encourage children to show kindness through their words and actions, demonstrate respect for different opinions and perspectives, develop resilience when learning becomes challenging, have the courage to step outside their comfort zones, nurture positive friendships and understand the importance of forgiveness.

As some of the older children in school, our Year 5 pupils are encouraged to become positive role models, recognising that their choices, attitudes and actions can make a real difference to others.

Together, we live out our school vision:

“Shine with the Light of Jesus”

In Year 5, we want every child to recognise their potential, embrace new opportunities and discover how they can use their own unique gifts and talents to help themselves and others shine.

    Growing independence, responsibility and confidence

Year 5 marks an exciting step into Upper Key Stage 2.

Children begin taking greater responsibility for their learning, organisation and decisions as they prepare for the opportunities and responsibilities that lie ahead.

We encourage children to become increasingly independent, thoughtful and reflective learners who can recognise their strengths and identify their next steps.

We want children to understand that growing up isn't about always having the answers. Sometimes, it's about knowing when to ask questions, having the courage to try something new and recognising that there is always more to learn. In Year 5, we encourage children to become confident thinkers, responsible learners and positive role models.

Our Year 5 curriculum is packed with exciting opportunities to investigate, discover, create and explore.

As children move through Upper Key Stage 2, we encourage them to think more deeply, make connections between subjects and develop a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills they are learning.

We want children to be active participants in their learning, asking thoughtful questions, exploring different possibilities and developing the confidence to explain and justify their ideas.

Little and often makes a big difference!

We believe that strong partnerships between home and school help children achieve their very best.

Home learning in Year 5 focuses on consolidating important knowledge and developing confidence in the skills children are learning at school.

    📖 Reading

Please encourage your child to read with an adult at least three times each week, recording this in their reading record.

Although children are becoming increasingly independent readers, adult encouragement and discussion remain incredibly valuable.

    🔤 Spellings

Children are encouraged to practise the statutory spelling words for Years 5 and 6, alongside revisiting important spelling patterns and words from previous year groups.

Rather than relying on weekly spelling tests, teachers regularly assess children's spelling through their writing and everyday learning. Children are encouraged to apply their spelling knowledge accurately across all subjects.

Our Y5 & Y6 spellings and the statutory spellings from Year 3 & Year 4 are available to access via our homework tab.

    🔢 Times Tables

Secure multiplication and division facts remain essential for mathematical confidence.

Children can practise using Times Tables Rock Stars and other mathematical games at home.

Building the foundations for our final year

Year 5 is an important stepping stone towards Year 6.

Throughout the year, we help children develop the confidence, independence and responsibility that will prepare them for their final year at Brinscall St John's.

We encourage children to become increasingly organised, take pride in their work, develop positive learning habits and recognise the important role they will soon play as the oldest pupils in school.

However, we also know that childhood is precious.

Year 5 is not simply about preparing for what comes next. It is about enjoying the opportunities, friendships, experiences and achievements that make this year special.

We want every child to finish Year 5 feeling proud of how far they have come and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead.
