Parents & ChildrenReception - Where our Journey Begins
Text
Welcome to Reception at Brinscall St John’s!
Reception is where the magic of learning begins, friendships blossom, confidence grows and little personalities shine!
Starting school is such an exciting milestone, and we feel incredibly privileged to be part of the beginning of your child’s journey. Our Reception classroom is a happy, busy and nurturing place, filled with curiosity, laughter, exploration and discovery.
Every day brings something new, whether we’re becoming storytellers, investigating numbers, creating masterpieces, building incredible constructions or discovering the wonders of the world around us.
At Brinscall St John’s, we want our youngest children to know from the very beginning that who they are and how they treat others matters just as much as what they learn.
Our six school values are woven naturally into everyday life in Reception:
Kindness • Respect • Resilience • Courage • Friendship • Forgiveness
We learn to be kind and care for one another, to show respect for ourselves, others and our world, to develop resilience when things feel tricky, to have the courage to try something new, to build wonderful friendships, and to understand the importance of forgiveness when things don’t quite go to plan.
Through play, stories, worship, conversations and all those little everyday moments, our children begin to understand what these values look like in real life.
They help us to live out our school vision:
"Shine with the Light of Jesus”
We want every Reception child to feel happy, safe, valued and excited about learning, developing the confidence and independence to have a go, make mistakes, try again and celebrate just how much they can achieve.
In Reception, we don’t just prepare children for Year 1 – we help them build the foundations to become confident, curious and compassionate learners who are ready to shine throughout their journey at Brinscall St John’s.

Meet Our Reception Team
Our Reception children are supported by a caring and dedicated team who work together to make every day special.
Mrs Pearce – Reception Class Teacher
Mrs Holding – Teaching Assistant
Mrs Savage – Thursday Morning Teacher
We pride ourselves on really getting to know every child: their interests, their personalities, their strengths and the things that make them unique.
Together, we create an environment where children feel confident to explore, ask questions, make mistakes, try again and celebrate their achievements.
We know how important it is to work closely with our families. If you have any questions, concerns or something wonderful to share, please contact Mrs Pearce through Arbor or via the school office
A day in Reception
-
Every day in Reception is filled with opportunities to learn, explore, play and grow.
Our daily routine provides a reassuring balance of structured teaching, independent learning, adult-supported activities, outdoor exploration and time to develop friendships.
As children become familiar with our routines, they grow in confidence and independence.Want to know what a typical day in reception is like? Take a look at our timetable below.

Learning together at home
-
We believe that learning works best when school and home work together.
In Reception, the most valuable things you can do with your child are often the simplest: sharing a story, talking about your day, counting objects, singing nursery rhymes or encouraging your child to have a go at something independently.📖 Reading Together
Sharing books is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child.
Whether you're reading a bedtime story, talking about pictures or listening to your child practise their phonics, every little moment helps.
We encourage families to read together at least three times each week, although a little reading every day is even better!
Remember, reading should be enjoyable. Celebrate your child's efforts and help them discover the magic of books.
✏️ Learning to Write
In Reception, children begin developing the physical skills, pencil control and letter formation needed to become confident writers.
We follow the Red Rose approach to letter formation. See the link within the homework tab
Homework
In Reception, homework is sent home every Thursday and is due back in on Tuesday. Our homework mostly consists of phonics, reading and writing. This gives the children the best start in recognising the letters both inside and outside of school.
Homework also includes reading. We appreciate every day you are able to read with your children.
In writing, we follow the Red Rose scheme. Please find below the attached writing formation examples.
EYFS at Brinscall St John's

Reception is just the beginning of an exciting learning journey at Brinscall St John’s.
Our dedicated Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) page explains much more about our curriculum, including what we teach, how children learn through purposeful play and carefully planned teaching, how learning progresses across the year, and how we prepare children for the next stage of their journey.
