Thinking bigger, aiming higher and discovering new ways to shine!

Welcome to Year 4 at Brinscall St John's!

Year 4 is a fantastic year of discovery, growing independence, exciting challenges and wonderful achievements!

As our children continue their journey through Key Stage 2, we encourage them to become increasingly confident, curious and independent learners who are ready to embrace new opportunities and challenge themselves.

Our Year 4 classroom is a happy, supportive and inspiring place where children are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions, share ideas, solve problems and take pride in their learning.

We want children to recognise just how capable they are, develop confidence in their own abilities and understand that learning isn't always about getting everything right the first time. Sometimes, our greatest achievements come from having the courage to try something difficult and the determination to keep going!

At Brinscall St John's, we believe that who we are and how we treat others matters just as much as what we learn.

Our six school values are at the heart of everything we do:

Kindness • Respect • Resilience • Courage • Friendship • Forgiveness

In Year 4, we encourage children to demonstrate kindness through thoughtful words and actions, show respect for others and their different perspectives, develop resilience when faced with challenges, have the courage to step outside their comfort zones, build positive friendships and recognise the importance of forgiveness.

As children grow older, we encourage them to take greater responsibility for living out these values, becoming positive role models within our school family.

Together, we live out our school vision:

“Shine with the Light of Jesus”

Meet the Team

In Year 4, we want every child to believe in themselves, discover their strengths, embrace new challenges and recognise that their actions can help others shine too!

Our Year 4 children are supported by a caring and dedicated team who work together to make every day a positive learning experience.

Mr Lewis – Class Teacher

Miss Hilton - Teaching Assistant

Mrs Savage – Wednesday and Thursday Afternoons

We believe that positive relationships are at the heart of successful learning.

Our aim is to create a classroom where every child feels known, valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their very best.

We know how important it is to work closely with our families. If you have any questions, concerns or something wonderful to share, please contact Mr Lewis through Arbor or via the school office.

Be curious. Think deeply. Challenge yourself!

Year 4 is a year when children really begin to develop their confidence as independent learners.

Our curriculum provides exciting opportunities to explore new knowledge, develop important skills and make connections between different areas of learning.

We encourage children to move beyond simply knowing an answer and begin thinking more deeply about how they know, why something happens and what they might discover next.

We want children to understand that learning is a journey, and every new discovery helps us grow.

In Year 4, we don't just learn new things – we learn how to become better learners!

Our Year 4 curriculum is carefully planned to build upon children's previous knowledge and skills while introducing new challenges and exciting learning opportunities.

We encourage children to make connections between what they already know, what they are learning now and where their learning will take them next.

Our curriculum is ambitious, engaging and designed to help every child achieve their very best.

    Small steps, big progress!

We believe that home and school working together makes a real difference to children's confidence and achievement. Home learning in Year 4 focuses on strengthening the essential skills children are developing in school.

    📖 Reading

Please encourage your child to read with an adult at least three times each week, recording this in their reading record.

    🔤 Spellings

Children are encouraged to practise the statutory spelling words for Years 3 and 4, alongside revisiting important spellings from previous year groups.

Rather than relying on weekly spelling tests, teachers regularly assess children's spelling through their writing and everyday learning.

Click on the homework tab to find a list of Year 3 and Year 4 statutory spelling words.

    🔢 Times Tables

Developing secure multiplication facts is particularly important in Year 4.

Children should regularly practise their times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars or the other resources linked above.
