New challenges, growing independence and exciting opportunities to shine!

Welcome to Year 3 at Brinscall St John’s!

Year 3 is an exciting milestone in our children’s journey as they take their first steps into Key Stage 2!

It is a year of growing confidence, greater independence and exciting new challenges. We build carefully on everything the children have learned in Key Stage 1, encouraging them to become curious thinkers, enthusiastic learners and increasingly independent young people.

Our Year 3 classroom is a happy, supportive and purposeful place where children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas, challenge themselves, learn from mistakes and take pride in their achievements.

There is so much to discover in Year 3, and we want every child to feel excited about coming to school and ready to see just what they can achieve.

At Brinscall St John’s, we believe that who we are and how we treat others matters just as much as what we learn.

Our six school values are at the heart of life in Year 3:

Kindness • Respect • Resilience • Courage • Friendship • Forgiveness

In Year 3, we encourage children to show kindness in the choices they make, demonstrate respect for themselves and others, develop resilience when learning becomes challenging, have the courage to step outside their comfort zone, nurture positive friendships and understand the importance of forgiveness.

As children become older, we encourage them to think more deeply about these values and how they can put them into action — in the classroom, on the playground, at home and within our wider community.

Together, we live out our school vision:

“Shine with the Light of Jesus”

Meet the Team

In Year 3, we encourage every child to recognise their strengths, embrace new challenges and use their own unique gifts and talents to shine.

Our Year 3 children are supported by a caring and dedicated team who work together to make the classroom a positive, welcoming and inspiring place to learn.

Moving into Year 3 is an exciting step!

As children begin Key Stage 2, we gradually encourage them to take greater responsibility for themselves and their learning.

This might mean remembering equipment, organising belongings, following routines independently, making sensible choices or having the confidence to ask for help when it is needed.

Children are also encouraged to think more deeply, explain their ideas, make connections between their learning and persevere when something doesn't work the first time.

But becoming more independent doesn't mean doing everything alone! Our adults are always there to encourage, guide, challenge and support.

Year 3 is about finding that wonderful balance between “I need some help” and the increasingly confident “I can do this!”

Our Year 3 curriculum is carefully planned to build upon children's previous learning while introducing exciting new knowledge, vocabulary and skills.

Children are encouraged to make connections with what they already know and understand how their learning will prepare them for what comes next.

Home learning in Year 3 focuses on strengthening the important skills children are developing in school.

    📖 Reading

Please read with your child at least three times each week and record this in their reading record.

    🔤 Spellings

Children will regularly revisit both their current year-group spelling expectations and important spellings from previous year groups.

Rather than relying on a weekly spelling test, teachers monitor children's spelling through their everyday writing and provide opportunities to revisit and practise words that need further consolidation.

All spelling lists can be found within the homework tab.

    🔢 Times Tables

Regular practice of multiplication facts is incredibly valuable in Year 3.

Children can use Times Tables Rock Stars at home, alongside quick-fire games and oral practice. Keep it short, positive and regular!
