Welcome to our wonderful Year 2 class at Brinscall St John's!

Year 2 is an exciting year filled with curiosity, creativity, growing independence and lots of opportunities to shine! Our classroom is a happy, welcoming place where children are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, challenge themselves and, most importantly, develop a lifelong love of learning.

As our children continue their journey through Key Stage 1, we focus on nurturing their confidence, celebrating their achievements and helping them recognise just how much they are capable of.

Whether we are becoming brilliant mathematicians, enthusiastic readers, imaginative writers, curious scientists or creative artists, every day brings something new to discover!

We believe that learning should be exciting, meaningful and full of memorable experiences. Through engaging lessons, practical activities, teamwork and plenty of encouragement, we help every child develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to flourish.

Our school values of Kindness, Respect, Resilience, Courage, Friendship and Forgiveness are woven throughout our days, helping us to look after one another, celebrate our differences and let our lights shine.

In Year 2, we believe that every child has something special to offer and every achievement, however small, deserves to be celebrated!

Big Questions, Bright Ideas and Exciting Discoveries!

Our Year 2 curriculum is carefully planned to build on the children's previous learning while introducing exciting new knowledge, skills and experiences.

Throughout the year, children will have opportunities to investigate, explore, create, question and make connections across different subjects.

We want our children to become confident learners who aren't afraid to make mistakes, have a go and keep trying when something feels tricky.

Take a look at our Year 2 Curriculum Map, under our curriculum heading to discover where our learning journey will take us this year!

Little and often makes a big difference

We know that the most valuable learning happens when school and home work together.

There are lots of simple ways you can support your child's learning, and it doesn't need to involve hours of homework!

📖 Reading – Share the Magic of Books!

Reading is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children.

We encourage all children to read with an adult at least three times each week.

Reading together provides wonderful opportunities to talk about stories, explore new vocabulary, ask questions and develop a love of books.

Remember, reading isn't just about getting the words right. It's about enjoying stories, imagining new worlds and sharing special moments together.

🔢 Maths – Make Numbers Fun!

In Year 2, we love exploring numbers, spotting patterns and developing our mathematical confidence.

During Autumn 1, we are focusing on:

⭐ Counting in 2s and learning our 2 times table.

⭐ Developing quick recall of number bonds to 10.

⭐ Building confidence and fluency through practical activities and games.

Children can enjoy practising their maths skills through:

Times Tables Rock Stars – Fun times tables practice.

Hit the Button – Quick-fire number challenges.

Remember, everyday activities such as counting coins, telling the time, playing board games and spotting numbers are fantastic opportunities for mathematical learning!

    ✏️ Spelling and Vocabulary

Throughout Year 2, we help children become increasingly confident writers by developing their spelling knowledge, vocabulary and understanding of language.

Rather than relying on weekly spelling tests, we encourage children to revisit and practise spelling patterns and common exception words regularly.

You can support your child by exploring the Year 1 and Year 2 Common Exception Words together.

Make spelling fun through word hunts, games, writing silly sentences or spotting familiar words in books!
